In Thursday’s second hour, D&C started out musing with Meter about his experience at the Football at Fenway soccer game Wednesday night between Celtic and Sporting. After a 1-1 tie in regulation, the Scottish team won the contest on extra penalty kicks in front of 32,162 fans.
Meter said he hadn’t been rooting for either club, but rather sat on the Portuguese end hoping for goals to be scored in front of him. If the European clubs played the New England Revolution, Meter said, Celtic and Sporting would win eight or nine out of 10 games played. Unimpressed that the stadium didn’t collapse in patriotic brawls between the Portuguese and the Scottish, Dennis and Callahan agreed the players in the match probably were all good athletes but only picked up soccer because they weren’t talented enough to play football, basketball or lacrosse.
Moving on, the hosts got into SportsIllustrated.com’s Fortunate 50 — the highest-earning American athletes. The top 10 consists of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Floyd Mayweather Jr., LeBron James, Alex Rodriguez, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning and Dwyane Wade.
The hosts went over some of the undeserving athletes on the list, including No. 19, the Ravens’ Terrell Suggs, who collected $23 million in the worst season of his career; No. 22 Jermaine O’Neal — who the hosts were thrilled to say will not match the $23 million he got this past year now that he’s with the Celtics; and No. 26 John Lackey, earning $21.7 million. Other Sox on the list include No. 43 Josh Beckett and No. 47 David Ortiz.
The gang was wondering how Tom Brady, who didn’t make the top 50, couldn’t feel a little bit bothered by having three Super Bowl rings and lower salary rankings than many of these underachievers.
There were some more revelations regarding Mel Gibson‘s dispute with Oksana Grigorieva, including a concussion suffered by Grigorieva reported two days after Gibson’s alleged beating of his wife while she held baby daughter Lucia. There also was discussion of extortion allegations against Grigorieva on Gibson’s end — though the hosts agreed it didn’t clear Gibson for his behavior.
The hosts finished up the second hour with some good jellyfish talk, coming off a Fox News report about stingings of more than 100 people in New Hampshire, and some calls from listeners about their own run-ins with Man-of-Wars.
Caller of the Hour: Craig in West Roxbury regaled the hosts with his heartwarming story about walking the beach with his wife a couple of years ago when he stepped on a jellyfish. He motivated his wife to squat down – on a lifeguard’s advice – and relieve herself on him to ease the pain of the stinging, which Craig described as like getting kicked between the legs.
Quote of the Hour: “Based on his performance, he should be giving money back,” John Dennis, on Vince Carter’s No. 31 ranking on SI.com’s Fortunate 50
